Roadtrip: Morristown and Surrounding Areas

Justtwomorethings arrived around mid-day on Thursday–and I felt bad about it since I was still at work and she had to spend 5+ hours wandering around doing god-knows what. So I let her pick the dinner place – the somewhat non-sensically named The Office Tavern Grill – and made it my treat.

Friday I snuck out of the office after 12pm to pick her up for lunch. We tried a place I’ve passed but never been before–French/Thai fusion The Origins on South Street. The lunch menu was more Thai than French, other than the pretty plate presentations, but the soft shell crab special was quite delish. The dark chocolate souffle with coffee ice cream wasn’t bad either.

Its berry-picking season in NJ now, so after lunch we headed to Alstede Farms in Chester. You pay the entry fee and then walk to the back where there are fields of blueberries, currants, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and peas. It was still a little early for peas, blackberries and raspberries, but we loaded up on everything else. After weighing and paying for the loot, we wandered around the front area which has pens of various chickens, donkeys, goats, sheep, cows, a peacock, pigs and bunnies. There’s also a little farm store that sells plants, ice cream and jam–justtwomorethings and I shared a nicely tart homemade lemonade before going back to the car.

After a night watching bad westerns (justtwomorethings had a craving), we woke up on a gray, drizzly Saturday morning to visit the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Basking Ridge, NJ. It was rather closer than i thought, and a nice morning walk. Quiet, with hardly any other people around, but unfortunately most of the animals were hiding from the wet. We did spot a woodpecker and save a turtle though (it was wandering around dangerously in the middle of the road, so we moved it to the grassy curb).

Lunch was at the Morristown Deli. I had only eaten there once before, in the outside doggie cafe (and yes, they have a doggie menu too). The Deli runs on oldtimey quirk, with racks of Pez dispensers (which I’ve always found slightly creepy) and cute snacks like Licorice cats. They also have a decent sandwich in generous portions–I had a pastrami, Justtwomorethings a chopped liver with egg.
